The Orange Johnson House in Two Parts

This house was built in two sections in two different years.  Can you identify which section was built first?

The section of the house with the porch was built first, in 1811 by a man named Arora Buttles. Arora was just 19 years old when he built this house. He then listed the house for sale in the newspaper.

The 1819 Addition to the House

This is an example of Federal architecture.  Is this house design symmetrical or asymmetrical?.

Orange Johnson hired Arora Buttles to add on to the original home in 1819. This type of architecture, called “Federal” architecture can be recognized by its SYMMETRY. If you fold the house in half down the middle, the windows and chimneys match on both sides of the center line.

What object does the window above the door look like to you?

The window over the door is called a FANLIGHT window, because it looks like a ladies fan. Fanlight windows are common in homes built in the early 1800s.
