Please consider making a donation to support the installation of Worthington’s next Historical Marker commemorating St. John A.M.E. Church and the Morris Addition!

The A.M.E. church, first known as Bethel A.M.E. was established in 1897 and is Worthington’s first African American Church. It was built in the Morris Addition, which was Worthington’s first platted subdivision in 1856, and home to numerous African American families in the 19th and early 20th centuries including the Turks, Farabees, Scotts, Alstons, Monroes, Parks, Bells, Carters, Clarks, Taborns and Todds.

In May 2022, the Worthington Historical Society, in partnership with St. John A.M.E. Church and the City of Worthington, applied for an Ohio Historical Marker to be erected in the Morris Addition in front of the historic St. John A.M.E. Church. The marker was approved in the fall of 2022, and awarded a $1000 grant toward the cost of producing the marker. In early January 2023, the marker was officially ordered and is going into production for installation hopefully later in the year.

Your contribution to the Worthington Historical Society’s Marker Fund is greatly appreciated.
